We work at the interface of machine learning and biology, from population-scale human genetics to single-cell and neural data. If that is the kind of problem you want to spend your time on, we would like to hear from you.
Most people who end up in the lab write to us before a formal opening exists, so do get in touch even if nothing is advertised right now.
ways to join
PhD students
Funded positions open when a project or a doctoral network has a place. These are tied to a specific call and have a deadline, and are announced on the news page.
We expect to open a position on MINDAI, our project on multimodal single-cell integration, through the Spanish FPI programme. If that sounds like your kind of work, write now rather than waiting for the call.
We also support applications to external fellowship schemes such as la Caixa, FI-STEP and MSCA. Those take months of preparation, so write well before the deadline rather than the week of it.
Master's and bachelor's theses
We supervise TFM and TFG projects at the Universitat de Barcelona, most often from the data science, biomedical engineering and biomedical data science programmes.
Get in touch a term ahead of when you want to start, and say which programme you are in.
Visiting researchers and secondments
We host PhD students and ERASMUS+ students from other institutions for stays of a few months, usually built around a concrete piece of work agreed in advance.

Research assistants
Positions open occasionally, attached to a funded project. Like PhD positions, they are announced on the news page.
what we look for
- Comfort writing code, in practice mostly Python, and a working grasp of probability, statistics or machine learning
- Backgrounds vary and we are not prescriptive: mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, data science and biomedical sciences are all represented in the lab. The biology can be learned on the way; the quantitative habits are harder to pick up later
- A specific interest in one of our research areas rather than a general interest in AI

A short email works better than a long one. Useful to include:
- your CV
- which of the research areas interests you, and why that one
- when you would be available, and for how long
- for thesis students, your programme and the term you need to start
We read everything, though a reply can take a couple of weeks in busy periods.
